PET INSURANCE 101

Wait, what even is pet insurance?

We’re so glad you asked. Pet insurance can be a complex, confusing thing. But it doesn’t have to be. Let’s unpack all the jargon, red tape and nonsense you’ve seen out there.

Pet insurance makes vet bills more affordable

That’s the simplest way to put it. If your pet is sick or hurt, pet insurance reimburses you for the cost of treatment. At Fetch by The Dodo, that means paying you back for up to 90% of your vet bill. We like to think about it like taking care of the people who take care of their pets.

Fetch’s insurance-speak translator

It can feel like insurance providers are speaking their own language.
Not sure how to make sense of it all? We’ve got you.

Pre-existing condition:

A pre-existing condition is an illness or injury that is diagnosed before your pet’s insurance policy is in effect. No pet insurance companies cover this. Learn more >

Waiting period:

A waiting period is the amount of time that a new policyholder needs to wait before filing their first claim. It’s a safeguard against people insuring pets who are already sick or hurt. Some providers have waiting periods up to 30 days. At Fetch, the waiting period is 15 days. Learn more >

Reimbursement rate:

Your reimbursement rate is the percentage that you get paid back for each covered vet visit. At Fetch, you can choose either 70%, 80% or 90%.

Premium:

A premium is the amount you pay for your pet’s insurance policy. At Fetch, you can choose to pay monthly, quarterly or annually.

Deductible:

A deductible is the amount you need to pay out of pocket before your pet insurance kicks in.

Claim:

A claim is a request to be paid back for a covered vet visit or treatment. How to file a claim >

Rider:

A rider is an add-on to your standard policy. For instance, some providers don’t include comprehensive dental in their base plan. It’s something you have to add as a rider and pay extra for. At Fetch, we cover all adult teeth in every plan.

Policy:

Your policy is the document that tells you exactly what is and isn’t covered by your insurance plan. See an example policy >

Annual limit:

Your annual limit is the maximum amount of money you can be paid back every policy year. It’s a number that you pick based on your needs.

Invoice:

An invoice is the bill or receipt you receive from your vet after a visit. In order to file a claim, you need proof of a paid invoice. It should also be itemized, meaning it details exactly what you were charged for.

Medical record:

A medical record is a report from your vet that details your pet’s medical history. This includes exam notes, lab results and any medical information.

Co-insurance:

Co-insurance is the percentage of your vet bill that is not covered by pet insurance. So if you have a 90% reimbursement rate, your co-insurance is 10%.

Exam fee:

An exam fee is the amount a vet charges just to see them. Often, pet insurance doesn’t cover these fees, which can cost up to C$250. Fetch covers exams fees for every sick visit.

Preventive Care:

Preventive care refers to things like checkups, vaccinations, spaying or neutering and teeth cleanings. Basically, anything that isn’t related to an illness or injury. These vet visits are not typically covered by pet insurance.

What does pet insurance cover?

Coverage varies by provider, but Fetch offers the most comprehensive plan there is — you won’t find this many covered treatments anywhere else.
What we cover

Comprehensive dental

We cover injury and disease in every adult tooth — unlike other providers that only cover the canines.

Any imaging deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian to help diagnose or treat your pet, including X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans and ultrasounds are covered.

Cancer treatment

We cover veterinary oncology care and cancer treatment.

Surgery & rehabilitation

We cover rehabilitation prescribed by a licensed veterinarian as part of a treatment and performed at a veterinary facility.

that is abnormal, dysfunctional or unusual for which there is no underlying medical condition(s). Behavioral disorders include, but are not limited to, aggression, separation anxiety or phobias.

Chiropractic care

If chiropractic care is recommended and performed by a licensed veterinarian, we cover it.

What we don’t cover

Any illness or injury that is diagnosed before your pet’s insurance policy is in effect will not be covered.

Routine & preventive care

Routine care procedures like checkups, vaccinations, teeth cleaning and spaying/neutering aren’t covered.
